For Immediate Release
April 20, 2021
For years, the staff at Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington dreamed of having a local immigration medical examiners’ office to better assist clients requiring an IME. (Immigration Medical Examination)
All applicants seeking immigration or permanent residency are required to go through a series of immigration medical examinations, including foreign nationals and refugees making claim at a port of entry. Medical exams are typically required within 30 days of arriving to Canada as a refugee.
Until recently, clients were required to travel to Kitchener, Ontario where Dr. Bakker and Dr. Casale served applicants from K-W, Guelph, and Wellington County. The journey to the medical office located in the Vicmount area of Kitchener was often “an arduous one for clients” says Sandra Cocco, Executive Director, Immigrant Services Guelph Wellington. “I remember we assisted a family of 7 from Kenya in the middle of a frigid winter”. “Imagine, just arriving to a foreign country, you do not speak the language and you begin venturing out to Kitchener on public transit with your children”? “Having medical examiners serve our community is a step in the right direction for Guelph”, says Cocco.
We are happy to welcome Dr. Bakker and Dr. Casale; two Immigration Medical Examiners to Guelph. The physicians’ office will be opening May 3rd, 2021. The office is located at 21 Surrey St. West, Unit 303 and the hours of operation will be 8am-2:30pm. For more details on their office services and location, please see their website at www.imeguelph.ca To book an appointment, clients can call their phone at (226) 486-0471. Phone lines will be open starting April 19th and clients can leave a voicemail message. Calls will be returned as soon as possible to arrange an appointment and answer any questions. Soon, the physicians hope to launch an online booking system that will be available through their website. The office is expected to serve approximately 2,000 applicants a year.
Clients can also book an appointment with a Settlement Counsellor from Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington. We would be happy to provide newcomers with assistance with the IME process. Those interested to learn more can call (519) 836-2222 to book an appointment. The agency’s full services are available online by phone or video conferencing.
Immigration Medical Examiners offices are funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / Government of Canada.
